Margaret Bentley wrote: “… Richmond Hill is named after a British duke Sherrard, known as Duke of Richmond. It is told he fought in the War of 1812 as a mercenary. For his services he was awarded a patent of land where he built a hunting lodge, which became known as Richmond ranch.”
